How utilization is measured
Utilization is calculated per card and across all cards. If you have a $10,000 limit and owe $4,000, your utilization is 40%. FICO and VantageScore both look at the balance the card issuer reports to the bureau, not the balance the day the score is pulled. That reported number is usually your statement balance.
The pre-statement pay-down trick
Look up your card's statement closing date. Pay the balance down to under 10% of the limit two or three days before that date. The lower balance is what the issuer reports to the bureau, and your score updates within a cycle. You do not need to carry a balance to build credit.
Key takeaways
- Under 30% is safe, under 10% is optimal.
- Pay before the statement closes, not just before the due date.
- You do not need to carry a balance to build credit.
