Pull all three reports
Under federal law you can pull free reports from Equifax, Experian and TransUnion once a week at AnnualCreditReport.com. Compare all three. Errors often appear on only one.
Dispute in writing, with proof
Each bureau has an online dispute portal, but mailing a written dispute with copies (not originals) of any supporting document creates a stronger record. The bureau has 30 days to investigate. If the creditor cannot verify the item, it must be removed.
What to expect
Simple errors — wrong balance, closed account marked open, account that is not yours — often resolve in the 30-day window. Complex disputes involving collections or identity theft take longer. Keep dispute confirmation numbers and copies of everything.
Key takeaways
- Free weekly reports at AnnualCreditReport.com.
- Written disputes with documentation beat one-click portal disputes.
- Creditors have 30 days to verify or the item must be removed.
