P0011: Intake Camshaft Position Timing Over-Advanced (Bank 1)
P0011 is a variable valve timing code. The fix ladder goes: fresh oil → solenoid → phaser → timing chain. Never let a shop skip straight to the timing chain.
Severity: moderate · System: Powertrain · Safe to drive: usually, short-term. Change oil first — cheap fix that resolves a surprising number of P0011 cases.
Symptoms
- Rough idle
- Loss of power
- Stalling
- Poor fuel economy
Common causes
- Low or dirty engine oil
- Failed VVT solenoid
- Cam phaser wear
- Timing chain stretch
Fair repair prices
| Oil change with correct viscosity | $60–$150 |
|---|---|
| VVT solenoid replacement | $250–$500 |
| Cam phaser replacement | $800–$2,000 |
| Timing chain job | $1,200–$3,000 |
Ranges are US market averages (parts and labor). If your shop's quote is above the high end, ask for a line-item breakdown or run it through the invoice checker.
